Graphics at Bluelight

When I was working towards gaining an education in Graphic Design and Marketing I often felt like a newspaper company would be something I would fit well into with the expertise I had. With an interest in Vector Art and Documentation Design I found making and writing advertising came easy to me. So I put it to use at USU Student Media with a team of other marketing and design students.
Gatsby Gala
One of my first clients gave me an interesting challenge for creating advertising for a Great Gatsby inspired Gala at the business school. The bright golds and Art Deco design really inspired me to bring out Illustrator and make a repeated shape resembling the gates seen in the movie.

I Incorporated a Monogram in the circular emblem in the center that matched the Huntsman Business school which was throwing the party for its senior students. Exploring the techniques to make these patterns and outlines in Illustrator was a great way to stretch the skills I had learned through my time with the program. After settling on a design I had to change the format of it to match different uses such as posters, social media posts, and signs around campus.

Loggers Ball
Another school was looking to throw a party for their seniors so working on both helped with inspiration about each. The Logo or Emblem that centered each poster was an important part but for the Loggers Ball I had to do a few iterations.

A central theme of the ball was sagebrush and starlight. Originally I followed a similar outlined style in illustrator but they had more interest in a second design I had made that was more painterly and floral. Using photoshop I had used the colors of sagebrush to take small leaves and paint around this font they had chosen. I followed with that with a watercolor painted background of a starry night sky.

Student Life Magazine
After getting used to posters and advertising with Bluelight we were given another option to work on a group project together. The Student Life Magazine was a magazine we would create together focusing on the cover and designing the ads that were bought for the project. Around 5 of us decided to all draw a few different students that we found around the school

When working with the ads that I was assigned throughout the magazine I mixed my knowledge of photography and graphics to make a cohesive and complementary group that would both match what the customers wanted and flow well together. We had tried to make them work well together throughout the magazine to improve readability and make the differences between pages less jarring.

Ad Campaigns
One special event that I was assigned to related to this magazine was the advertising for an Alumni event that was meant to celebrate some of the most interesting and influential students that had graduated from the school. This was to be front page news at the school so it was important for the logo and graphics to stand out. So I took the logo they had made previously and improved it so that it felt more professional. Taking the hand drawn lines from the previous years logo and making them into outlines that better matched the graphic and text behind

But it wasn’t just to be displayed on a white background. It had to be changed so that it could on many different blues and dark colors for printing on a newspaper or sharing online. So I developed some graphics for all of these situations. With over 20 different formats and colors for the customer to choose from I made sure they were able to spread the word about this event

Another big event that I helped advertise in the newspaper and magazines on campus was for the Aggie Blue Quiz. A survey made for students that was meant to find what they found most needed around the school. From new cafes and ideas for public events to research and study material they wanted to have access to for their education

Using all of my skills with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign these advertisements were able to be spread around the school. On signs, posters, newspapers and online I was able to spread the word of these events that I advertised.

Graduating in Design
All of this experience from my work at Bluelight Studios and earning my Bachelors Degree in Graphic Design gave me a great perspective on what it means to spread a message you care about. I worked with people that had celebrations and announcements for events and knowledge for the people around them. Using these skills I made spreading a message the main passion in my career
