Graffiti and Grunge

In Berlin, the club and rave culture has influenced the fashion of the city. One thing that stays strong though is the love for the color black. With an idea in mind I took my model out to the graffiti and neon filled streets of Warschauer Straße.
Uber Lights
Outside of the Uber arena there are these towers that stand over a water park where patrons can wait for their favorite artists to perform. These towers display colorful and bright ads that would reflect off the smooth stone. Lighting up my subject for a soft and vibrant profile.

The alleyways around the plaza were covered with the scrawling lines of its citizens. Bright neon lights lit the paths below the rails. Playing with poses and color I focused the subject with a harsh shadow and details in the hair. I think I prefer the purple for the way that it highlights the yellow of the hair, giving the photo a golden hue.

Graffiti
Something that I wanted to emphasize about berlin was the art of graffiti that permeates every corner of the city. Some just a simple name put on a pillar while others are complicated and brightly colored tags made by local artists. The chaotic nature of this art makes for a good example of the feeling of the city.

A famous place for art in Berlin is painted on the remnants of the wall that divided the city. Many famous pieces are displayed on the front from the street but on the back is a place for others to make their mark. With many different backgrounds to choose from I stopped at places with a good mix of color and style.

Working with my flash I captured her in pensive and strong poses to evoke a confidence. This style has a hard edge from the complete black clothes to the bright and chaotic graffiti. So I wanted to put a focus on that hard edge in her mood and pose as well

Superstar
I have been reading and browsing through a lot of photobooks from artists around the city to try and make my own expression of the life on the street. Taking from them their own experiences have shown me that the experience always comes from the person who is making these stories and adventures. There’s more to explore out there with this idea.
