Halloween Portraiture

The season had come for all hallows eve and I had found a reason to make something equally haunting and attractive. I invited a friend of mine to the mountains dressed in a black dress themed for a vampiric presence. We walked through the valley with many different props and ideas that made for a spooky photoshoot in the snow
Working with Props
My aim for this photoshoot was to make something that was able to emphasize a haunting or creepy nature through the use of props and theming. We worked together to create an outfit of black lace and traveled up to a local canyon. The rocks in the area formed a natural cave where we began this endeavor.

I wanted to use props such as this deer skull that I had found out in the wild some years ago to bring out an unsettling scene of holding it over the face. I was inspired by Folklore of the Americas and used colored the scene for a darker background.

I brought with me a timber wolf fur shawl as well to match with her skin and hair. The contrast with the dark dress brings out the face. Leaning against the dark rock face to focus on the details of the fur and the direction of her body and eyes

Using the Environment
This year as early as October we received snow in the mountains around us. Autumn had passed and winter was just beginning to take hold. A large cavity formed out of the rocks created a setting that helped sell the spooky atmosphere. The lighting was perfect for both dark and moody.

In this snowy canyon we walked exploring the forest. Taking a more wistful expression from the subject added an air of mystery from her. I was looking to draw the eye of the viewer to her face and the direction she was looking as if something was off in the distance.

Experimenting with Color
Something I like to do often when working on creative photoshoots for people is experimenting with different colors on the same or similar photos. Often I feel that there are multiple ways to display or express color in an image and it gives the client a choice on which one they prefer for what they are working on.

Expressing Creativity
These creative photoshoots I have with other enthusiastic artists are some of the most fun projects to work on. Its an exploration of both of our creativity and it makes for a passionate result.
